A
BRIEF HISTORY LESSON
Numeric Displays
were used on a lot of electronic equipment in the Mid
70's. These units consisted of devices
containing Neon Gas
which glowed red when a high voltage was placed across them. Numercators
as they were called could only display numbers.
The 7
Segment Display became popular when Hand-Held
Calculators first appeared. These used
Light
Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and were controlled
by a Microprocessor.
This was the time
when equipment started to exploit the 7
Segment Display for use with Alphabetic
Characters as well as numbers.
The 7
Segment Display's popularity diminished
rapidly after the introduction of the Liquid
Crystal Display (LCD) which could display
not only Alpha-Numeric Characters
but Graphics
as well.
